Hey everybody! Starting today we are going to have weekly "awards" for the hero and goat of the week for the Red Sox. Make sure you don't confuse the goat of the week with the G.O.A.T. The goat of the week is the player who played the worst or were the most costly in the team's losses, not the "Greatest of All time."
The Red Sox finished this week with a 4-3 record. They took care of business on Monday vs the Rays, won 2 of 3 against Toronto in the middle of the week, and dropped 2 of 3 against the Orioles this weekend. There are plenty of candidates for this week's hero and goat but the decision was relatively simple.
Hero: Mookie Betts
Betts was this week's MVP without a doubt. He hit .321 but led the Sox in slugging with a percentage of .607. He had 2 double and 2 home runs to go along with his 9 RBIs and 3 stolen bases. Not only was Betts raking this week, but he was clutch as well. Betts hit the go-ahead bases clearing double in the 10th inning on Thursday to seal the win vs Toronto.
Honorable Mention: Andrew Benintendi
Benintendi was on fire this week hitting .480 and reached base over half of the time he stepped up to the plate. Although he only played in 6 games he had 12 hits. His OPS was over 1 and looked unstoppable. The biggest reason he is mentioned here is because if he can stay hot, then the Sox have a seriously dangerous lineup and a future perennial All-Star.
Goat: Sandy Leon
It is always tough to pick the goat of the week because I hate saying somebody was the worst on the team. However, this week was pretty simple. Sandy Leon hit an abysmal .071 this week. He played in 4 games and is starting to really split time with Christian Vazquez behind the plate. It is tough to ignore that Leon may be getting replaced for the time being. Some people may argue that Brian Johnson is this week's goat but he was called upon for a spot start. Not much was expected of him whereas Leon is supposed to produce.
That swing just simply isn't going to cut it. At least take a hard swing and maybe you wouldn't be the goat this week.
Check back in next Sunday for round 2 of the weekly awards!
