Joint Practices with the Jaguars just wrapped up and now we're onto preseason game 1 Thursday night. It's time to take a look at the roster & who has put themselves in contention for consideration on the 53 man roster.
Roster Locks (42)
By all accounts thus far Dion Lewis' explosion is back from his ACL injury in 2015. He should factor in a rotation as a dynamic change of pace RB.
Ted Karras has shined at camp as the main backup at guard & center. His versatility will be useful this upcoming season.
Jonathan Jones has competed all camp for the nickel CB spot with Eric Rowe & also is the team's gunner across Matthew Slater. He's a classic Belichick four down depth player.
Near Locks (5)
Danny Amendola is as clutch as they come & took another pay cut to stay a patriot this season. Barring an Austin Carr breakout in the preseason, Danny is safe.
Shea McClellin flashed some pass rushing ability in limited moments last season. He looks to fill Ninkovich's role as an outside linebacker/defensive end hybrid.
Cyrus Jones hasn't particularly stood out in coverage thus far in camp. However, he's only fumbled once too. Look for him to get a second chance in 2017.
On The Bubble (16)
LB after Hightower & Harris remains unclear. Elandon Roberts hopes to grow on a rookie season where he flashed in run defense but struggled in coverage. Veteran Kyle Van Noy needs to clean up his lapses in coverage if he wants to move in the near lock category. UDFA Harvey Langi has earned reps with the 1st/2nd teams as a pass rusher. These roster spots will get sorted out this preseason.
UDFA Adam Butler has come out of nowhere recently by wrecking havoc against the Jaguars 1st/2nd teamers in 1 on 1 drills. His pass rushing ability as a defensive tackle in sub packages should give him a decent chance to make the roster.
UDFA Kenny Moore continues to make a play on the ball just about every practice. Although CB is one of our deepest positions, he will get every chance to win a roster spot with a strong preseason.
Players in the longshots category are mostly veteran camp bodies & UDFAs that have yet to stick out at camp. If the Patriots decide to keep a 9th OL week 1, one of these players could emerge.
