Potential Patriots #3 - Alabama OLB Tim Williams

Potential Patriots #3

The third player in our Potential Patriots Draft Series is OLB Tim Williams out of Alabama. The Patriots' EDGE rusher situation is currently up in the air with Chris Long & Jabaal Sheard set to be free agents. While Trey Flowers enjoyed a breakout season in his second year recording 9.5 sacks in 11 starts, the team will likely be looking to bring in additional pass rushers either in FA or the draft.

Overview

Despite having a situational role on the talented Alabama defensive line, Williams earned 2nd team All-American honors as a relentless pass rusher last season. He enters the draft as one of the most talented pure pass rushers in the entire class. While he is likely best suited as a 3-4 OLB, he offers versatility as a DE in 4-3 schemes. However, his involvement in off the field incidents involving failed drug tests as well as a misdemeanor gun charge will affect his draft stock.

Final Verdict

An elite pass rushing prospect with high upside, Williams would be a lock as a top 15 selection without his prior incidents. However, these off field concerns along with his limited role in Saban's defense could lead to him falling to the second round. If the Patriots are willing to make a gamble, Williams would be a natural fit in Belichick's hybrid defense as a 3-4 OLB & 4-3 DE.
